From Old Spanish fumeyar, from Latin fūmigāre, present active infinitive of fūmigō[1]. Equivalent to humo + -ear. Compare Galician and Portuguese fumegar, Asturian fumiar, Catalan fumejar. See also fumigar, a borrowed doublet.
