Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pǫxyrь, *pǫxorь. Doublet of bachor, bachorz, bachórz (belly, stomach), a borrowing from Czech. Compare also mecherz, mechierz, męcherz, męchierz (bladder) from *měxyrь, *měxorь (bubble, bladder, blister etc.).
