From Middle High German süezlich, suozlich, sūzlich, from Old High German suozlīh, swuozlīh, equivalent to süß (“sweet”) + -lich. Cognate with Dutch zoetelijk (“mawkish; sentimental”), Middle English swetly, sweetly (“pleasant; lovely”, adj).
