From Proto-Slavic *gǫditi, Proto-Slavic *gǫsti. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic гѫдити (gǫditi), Serbo-Croatian гудити, Russian гуди́ть (gudítʹ), Ukrainian гуді́ти (hudíty), Upper Sorbian hudźić.
