Originally a case form of a defective noun تَحْت‎ (taḥt, “location that is below”); see the usage note. From the root ت ح ت‎ (t-ḥ-t). Related to Hebrew תַּחַת‎, Ge'ez ታሕት (taḥt), Ugaritic 𐎚𐎈𐎚 (tḥt /taḥta/) and Classical Syriac ܬܰܚܬ‎.

Other forms are the adverbial accusative in the preposition تَحْتَ‎ (taḥta, “below”), the genitive in the expression مِنْ تَحْتِ‎ (min taḥti, “from below, below”) (also with an attached pronoun, as in مِنْ تَحْتِهَا (min taḥtihā, “(from) below it”)), and the irregular expression مِنْ تَحْتُ‎ (min taḥtu, “(from) below”).
