Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yẹl (“wind”); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰘𐰠‎ (yél), Azerbaijani yel, Bashkir ел (yel), Chuvash ҫил (śil), Kazakh жел (jel), Kyrgyz жел (jel), Tatar җил (cil), Turkmen ýel and Uzbek yel.
