Etymology

The ancient Chu dialect word for "macaque". The first syllable in 沐猴 (OC *moːɡ ɡoː) and 母猴 (OC *mɯʔ ɡoː, “macaque”) (found in pre-Qin texts) may be an old pre-initial (Schuessler, 2007).
Likely cognate with 母猴 (OC *mɯʔ ɡoː, “macaque”), 獼猴 (OC *mnel ɡoː, “macaque”) and 馬猴/马猴 (mǎhóu, “macaque”).
