Etymology
Unger (1986) reconstructs Old Chinese pronunciation as *pl(j)aŋʔ and considers this item part of a word family under 陽 (OC *laŋ) and related to Thai ปลั่ง (bplàng, “bright”); alternatively, Schuessler (2007) reconstructs OC *br(j)aŋʔ and includes this in an Austroasiatic word family under 亮 (OC *raŋs).
