- Sino-Tibetan; cognate with Tibetan གྱོང (gyong, “want, need, indigence”) (Schuessler, 2007). Possibly a variant of 窘 (OC *ɡrunʔ, “to be distressed”). Possibly further connected to 恐 (OC *kʰoŋʔ, “to fear”), 窮 (OC *ɡuŋ, “poor”) (ibid.). See these for more.
