Cognate with Latvian pèļņa (“gain, profit”), pelnīt (“to profit”), Proto-Slavic *pelnъ (“loot”). Likely related to Proto-Germanic *falaz (“for sale”). Unclear if related to Ancient Greek πωλέω (pōléō, “I sell”).
