Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *vьrtъ (turn, enclosure), cognate with Serbo-Croatian вр̏т and akin to Russian вертоград (vertograd). The meaning garden continues Old Church Slavonic врьтъ (vrĭtŭ, garden) and is nowadays limited to dialects from South-Western Bulgaria (and Slavic dialects in Northern Greece).
