въртоп

Bulgarian

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *vьrtъpъ, cognate with Serbo-Croatian вртоп, Slovene vrtȅp, Russian верте́п (vertép, cave). Attested with the meaning cave, garden in Old Church Slavonic врьтъпъ (vrĭtŭpŭ). Loaned into Romanian Vârtop (toponym).

According to Georgiev (BER), probably an ancient compound word from Bulgarian въртя (vǎrtja, to rotate) + the descendant of Proto-Balto-Slavic *upas (water) (cf. Lithuanian ùpė (river), Latvian upe (spring, water)). This etymology however fails to explain the additional meanings garden, cave attested in Church Slavonic and in other Slavic languages.
