Inherited from Proto-Iranian *káršati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *káršati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷéls-e-ti, from *kʷels- (to pull, drag).

Cognate with Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (karšaiti) and Sanskrit कर्षति (karṣati). Also compare Old Armenian քարշ (kʿarš), an Iranian borrowing.

Related to کشور (kešvar, realm, region).
