Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀤𑀺 (cakkhadi), possibly from Sanskrit *चक्षति (*cakṣati, tastes), from Proto-Indo-Aryan. Cognate with Assamese চাকা (saka) / চকা (soka).
