آباد

Arabic

Noun

آبَاد (ʔābād) m pl

  1. plural of أَبَد (ʔabad)

Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian ʾp̄ʾt' (ābād, populous, thriving, prosperous). Per Lubotsky, from Proto-Iranian *āpāta-, from *paH-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paH-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect), whence also پاییدن (pâyidan).

Compare also Old Armenian ապատ (apat), -ապատ (-apat) and անապատ (anapat),which are Iranian borrowings.
Commonly compared to Sanskrit आवास (āvāsa, abode, residence, dwelling), which is most likely from वसति (vasati, to dwell, live, stop, stay).
