Etymology

From ܫܠܵܡܵܐ‎ (šlāmā, “peace”) +‎ ܥܲܠܘܿܟ݂‎ (ʿaloḵ, “upon you”), literally “peace be upon you”; compare the same in Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ‎ (as-salāmu ʕalayka), Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עָלֶיךָ‎ (shalóm alékha).
