Etymology
From ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlama, “peace”) + ܥܲܠܵܟ݂ܝ (ʿālaḳ, “upon you”), literally “peace be upon you”; compare Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكِ (as-salāmu ʿalayki) and Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עָלַיִךְ (shalóm aláyikh).
