Etymology
From ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlama, “peace”) + ܥܲܠܵܘܟ݂ܘܿܢ (ʿāloḳon, “upon you”), literally “peace be upon you”; compare Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ (as-salāmu ʿalaykum), Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עֲלֵיכֶם (shalóm aleikhém).
