From Proto-Southwestern Tai *fuːŋᴬ¹ (flock; swarm; group; party). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨺᩪᨦ, Lao ຝູງ (fūng), ᦚᦳᧂ (ḟung), Shan ၽုင် (phǔng) or ၾုင် (fǔng), Ahom 𑜇𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phuṅ).
