From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sweśuras, from Proto-Indo-European *sweḱuros. Cognate with Lithuanian šẽšuras, Ancient Greek ἑκυρός (hekurós), Latin socer, Proto-Germanic *swehuraz, Sanskrit श्वशुर (śváśura).
