Pronunciation 3
Definitions
調
- (obsolete) Alternative form of 朝 (zhāo, “morning”).
- 未見君子、惄如調飢。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, trad.]
- From: The Classic of Poetry, c. 11th – 7th centuries BCE, translated based on James Legge's version
- Wèi jiàn jūnzǐ, nì rú zhāojī. [Pinyin]
- While I could not see my lord, I felt as it were pangs of morning hunger.
未见君子、惄如调饥。 [Pre-Classical Chinese, simp.]
Usage notes
Legge translates 調飢 as "great hunger", apparently based on Zhu Xi's glossing 調 as 「重也」 ("grave, serious").[1] On the other hand,《毛詩傳》Mao Commentary glosses 調 as 「朝也」.[2]
