Etymology
Plausibly from either:
- Spanish paga (“payment; to pay”), as from Spanish pagar (“to pay”), which was frequently used as the main definition in 1½ of the pages for the Hokkien term for "to pay", attested and translated in Spanish in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1604).[1] The Chinese community of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era used to speak a sort of Spanish pidgin variety known as "Caló Chino Español" or "Kastilang tindahan".[2]
- Tagalog pala (“recompense; consequence; payment taken from someone”), as attested in the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala (1860)[3]
