Derived as a 文字詞 (moji kotoba, letter word) from either 湯具 (yugu, literally hot water + material) or 湯巻 (yumaki, literally hot water + wrap), originally referring to a simple wrap around the wearer's loins when using a public bath or hot spring.[1][2]
