Wang (1982) suggests that it is cognate with 痛 (OC *l̥ʰoːŋs, “painful”).
Coblin (1986) derives it from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *gdəngw (“pain; hurt”), comparing it to Tibetan གདུང་བ (gdung ba, “to feel pain”) and keeping it separate from the word family with 痛. Schuessler (2007) notes that this is a post-classical word.
