Schuessler (2014) reconstructs its pronunciation as *kwêt-dê > *kuet-dei. Pulleyblank (1962) proposes a Yeniseian origin; he compares it to Ket [script needed] (kus), Kott [Term?] (huś) & Pumpokol [Term?] (kut) ~ kus, all descending from Proto-Yeniseian *kuʔs (“horse”)
