Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pérti (stem *pьr-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *pertei, from Proto-Indo-European *prey, whence English fare and ferry as well as German fahren. Baltic cognates include Latvian pērt and Lithuanian perti.
