Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *sŋ̊ʰraʔ, *sŋ̊ʰras) : semantic 林 (“forest; grove; woods”) + phonetic 疋 (OC *ŋraːʔ, *sŋra, *sŋraʔ).

Etymology

Schuessler (2007) proposes an Austroasiatic origin; compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟlaʔ (“thorn”). Compare with Burmese ရှာ (hra) (‌as in ထောက်ရှာ (htaukhra, “chaste tree, vitex”)) and Burmese ဆူး (hcu:, “thorn”).
