Proto-Slavic

Etymology

Most likely (per Pedersen, favoured by Vasmer) prefixed form of *pri- +‎ *krъ, comparable with Ukrainian укри́й (ukrýj, “unpleasant”) (with *u- instead). Root ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to bend, to crook”).

Less probable derivation (per Machek, Holub & Kopečný) presumes reanalysis from an earlier *pikrъ < Proto-Indo-European *peyk- (“to cut, to fight; to paint”) + *-rъ (whence Ancient Greek πικρός (pikrós, “keen, sharp”), Lithuanian pìktas (“evil”); possibly further Proto-Slavic *pьkъlъ (“resin”)).

    Synonyms: *strьmъ, *krǫtъ
  2. pungent, unpleasant (of taste)
