Inherited from Old Polish bić, from Proto-Slavic *bìti (stem *bьj-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *bī́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéyh₂-ti ~ *bʰih₂-énti, from *bʰeyh₂- (to strike, hit). See also bicz (whip), bitwa (battle) and bój (fight).
