Characters in the same phonetic series (丩) (Zhengzhang, 2003)
Phono-semantic compound (形聲, OC *ɡrɯw) : semantic 虫 + phonetic 丩 (OC *kɯw, *krɯw).
Etymology

Coblin (1986) compares this to Tibetan ཀླུ (klu, “serpent, naga”), yet see 蛟 (OC *kreːw); most likely etymology is "twisting, wriggling" (Carr, 1990; Schuessler, 2007). Note 糾 (OC *kɯw, *krɯwʔ) "to twist, plait, wind, entwine".
